About the book

Dr. Elwin Ransom, a Cambridge philologist, is kidnapped by a physicist and a businessman who transport him to the planet Malacandra in a sphere-shaped spaceship. While his captors intend to exploit the planet’s gold and offer Ransom as a human sacrifice to appease the local inhabitants, Ransom escapes into the wilderness. He encounters three distinct sentient species: the hrossa, the sorns, and the pfifltriggi. Through these interactions, he learns that Malacandra is an unfallen world governed by an angelic intelligence called the Oyarsa. Ransom eventually defends humanity’s spiritual condition against the destructive colonial ambitions of his kidnappers during a trial before the planetary ruler.

Science fiction readers interested in theological allegory and philology find this narrative useful for its unique construction of alien languages and mythologies. It appeals to those who prefer stories where scientific progress is measured against moral philosophy and medieval cosmology rather than technological advancement. The reader exits with a perspective on the "Great Chain of Being" and an understanding of how human hubris can distort the perception of the universe as either a cold void or a populated, spiritual heaven.
