The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ
Presented as the record of ancient inhabitants of the Americas, this text begins with the prophet Lehi, who leaves Jerusalem with his family around 600 BC. His sons Nephi and Laman become the founders of rival peoples, and the book tracks their wars, prophets, and alternating periods of faithfulness and decline. At its center is an account of Jesus Christ visiting the people after his resurrection, followed by the final destruction of the Nephites. Joseph Smith published it in 1830, saying he translated it from golden plates.
Latter-day Saints treat it as scripture alongside the Bible. Students of American religious history and comparative religion read it to understand the founding text of a faith that has grown to millions of members.
Deep, contemplative and open-ended; a moderate read.
