The Mabinogion is a collection of medieval Welsh tales, preserved in manuscripts of the fourteenth century but containing much older material. Its core is the Four Branches of the Mabinogi, which include the stories of Pwyll, who rules the underworld for a year, and his wife Rhiannon, of Branwen and the war with Ireland, and of the magician Math and his nephews. The collection also includes the tale of Culhwch and Olwen, early Arthurian stories, and a number of romances. They are a major source for Celtic myth.
It suits readers interested in myth, legend, and the roots of Arthurian literature. Those who enjoy fantasy novels inspired by Welsh tradition will find the original tales strange, vivid, and surprisingly funny.
Deep and outward-looking; a moderate read.
