Carlos Castaneda continues the account of his apprenticeship with the Yaqui sorcerer don Juan Matus. This volume centers on the idea of the nagual and the tonal, the assemblage point, and the notion of silent knowledge, and describes exercises done in the Sonoran desert. Castaneda's teacher pushes him to stop the internal dialogue and to confront death.
Readers interested in esoteric traditions and the counterculture of the 1970s will find it a classic of its kind. Note that its status as anthropology is disputed, and many now read it as imaginative spiritual fiction.
Inward-looking and open-ended; a moderate read.
