Mowgli, a human baby, is lost in the Indian jungle and raised by a wolf pack under the guidance of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther. Kipling's stories follow him as he learns the Law of the Jungle, makes an enemy of the tiger Shere Khan, is kidnapped by the monkeys, and eventually has to choose between the jungle and the village of men. The collection also includes separate tales, such as the brave mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi fighting two cobras and the white seal Kotick looking for a safe home.
Children and adults who read aloud together will find vivid animal characters and clear ideas about loyalty, courage, and belonging. For adult readers, it is also worth reading for Kipling's sense of the jungle as a society with rules.
Clear-cut; an easy read.
