About the book

The letters of the alphabet climb up a coconut tree, in this rhyming picture book. Little a, b and c begin, and as others join, they cry out that they will meet at the top of the coconut tree, but the tree becomes crowded, and, with a boom, they all fall down in a heap. Adults arrive, including the letters' uppercase parents, who help to pick them up, bruised and bandaged. The story ends with a bigger challenge, when the letters try again. Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault use rhythm and bold, colorful illustrations by Lois Ehlert to teach the letters of the alphabet.

It suits toddlers and preschoolers learning letters, and parents who need a book that is fun to chant aloud. Its sing-song beat means children quickly join in.
