About the book

A farm girl, Fern Arable, rescues the smallest pig in a litter and raises him as a pet named Wilbur. After he is sold to her uncle's barn, Wilbur is lonely, but the spider Charlotte tells him she will help. Hearing that he is to be butchered, she spins messages into her web, including "Some Pig," to make people see Wilbur's worth. With the sheep, the goose and the greedy rat Templeton, they head to the fair.

A warm story for young readers, and a good choice for sharing aloud. It teaches about friendship and facing death honestly, in a tone that stays gentle.
