A tree loves a little boy. When he is young, she lets him gather her leaves, climb her trunk and eat her apples, and she is happy. As he grows, he wants money, a house and a boat, and each time the tree offers what she has: her apples to sell, her branches to build with, her trunk to carve into a boat. In the end the boy returns as an old man, and the tree, now a stump, has one more thing to offer him.
