Julia Alvarez tells the story of Salomé Ureña, the nineteenth-century Dominican poet who became a national figure, and of her daughter Camila Henríquez Ureña, who grew up in her shadow. The narrative moves backward and forward across the century, from Santo Domingo to Cuba and the United States, and covers the political upheavals, exile and the search for identity of two women who shaped Caribbean intellectual life.
It is for readers of historical fiction, particularly about women and Latin America. It will interest those who know Alvarez from How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and want to see her in a historical mode.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
