Tyler Paquette is a boy on a Vermont dairy farm that is in danger of being lost after his father's accident. To keep it running, the family hires migrant workers from Mexico, whose daughter Mari Cruz is Tyler's age. The novel is told in alternating voices, including Mari's letters to her mother, as the two children become friends. Meanwhile, the threat of immigration raids hangs over Mari's family, and each child has to understand the other's world.
Middle-grade readers will find a warm story about immigration, friendship and family loyalty. It works well in classrooms and offers a clear view of life for undocumented farm workers.
Clear-cut and thought-provoking; an easy read.
