About the book

Bastian Balthazar Bux is a shy, bookish boy bullied at school who hides in an attic with a mysterious old book called The Neverending Story. As he reads, he discovers the land of Fantasia, which is being swallowed by a formless Nothing. The Childlike Empress is dying, and the young warrior Atreyu is sent on a quest to save her, with the luck dragon Falkor as companion. Bastian realizes that he is being called into the story himself. Michael Ende's novel shifts between the real world and Fantasia, and uses its imagined creatures to say something about imagination, desire and the cost of getting what you wish for.

Readers of all ages who love fantasy about stories and readers will enjoy it. It is longer and more serious than the film suggests, and rewards patient readers.
