The wolf of the old tale tells his side of the story: he claims he was innocent, a victim of bad press. In his version, he only wanted to borrow a cup of sugar to bake a cake for his granny, but he had a terrible cold and sneezed, blowing down the first pig's straw house and then the second's stick house. Since the pig was dead, he thought it would be a shame to waste a good ham dinner. Jon Scieszka's picture book, with Lane Smith's illustrations, is a comic retelling that plays on the idea that the narrator may not be reliable.
Kids who know the traditional story will find it funny, and teachers use it to introduce point of view. Parents will enjoy the wolf's indignant voice, and the book invites discussion about how stories change depending on who tells them.
Practical, outward-looking and escapist; an easy read.
