Lucy keeps hearing noises inside the walls of her house and is sure they come from wolves. Her family laughs it off, reminding her that when wolves get out of the walls, it is all over. Then the wolves do come out, and the family flees into the garden. Lucy, along with her pig-puppet, sneaks back in to retrieve it and discovers the wolves living the family's life, eating their jam and watching their television. Dave McKean's mixed-media illustrations give the creatures a menacing, scruffy look.
Parents reading aloud to children around five to eight get a story with real shivers and a funny, defiant ending. Kids who like their bedtime stories slightly scary will enjoy it, and adults who know Gaiman's darker fiction will recognize his sly humor in a picture-book format.
Balanced in tone; an easy read.
