In late 1789, Martha Ballard, a Maine midwife and healer, records a dead body found trapped in the Kennebec River's ice. The man is one of two individuals accused of a violent assault earlier that year, an event Martha witnessed first-hand. As the community moves to dismiss the death as an accident, Martha uses her detailed diary and professional expertise to identify signs of foul play. She navigates a rigid legal system and local hostility to testify about the physical evidence she observes during birthings and deaths. The narrative focuses on her efforts to secure justice in a frontier town where women's testimonies carry little weight compared to the word of influential men.
Readers interested in the intersection of early American law and social history will find a detailed look at eighteenth-century forensic practices. This audience values a realistic portrayal of colonial domestic life and the technical realities of herbal medicine and midwifery. Those who enjoy investigative plots set within strict historical constraints gain an understanding of how social hierarchies dictated the outcome of criminal trials. By the end, the reader sees how a single woman’s persistent record-keeping functioned as a tool for accountability in a society designed to silence certain voices.
Inward-looking and contemplative; a moderate read.
