Salama Kassab is an eighteen-year-old pharmacy student living in Homs during the Syrian revolution. While she works at a local hospital treating victims of military strikes, she struggles with the decision to leave her homeland for Europe or stay to help those in need. Her internal conflict manifests as Khawf, a physical hallucination representing her fear and traumatic stress. Through her interactions with Kenan, a young man filming the protests to document the truth, Salama navigates the daily threat of imprisonment and death while tending to her pregnant sister-in-law.
Readers interested in the intersection of contemporary history and young adult fiction will find a detailed account of the Syrian refugee crisis. The narrative provides a perspective on how war forces teenagers into premature adulthood and the specific logistical struggles of fleeing a conflict zone. It appeals to those seeking to understand the psychological weight of survival guilt and the tension between national loyalty and self-preservation. A reader finishes this book with a better grasp of the human cost behind international news headlines and the reality of displacement.
Deep, inward-looking and contemplative; a moderate read.

Insights from Cât timp înfloresc lămâii
