About the book

This collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories is built around a frame tale. King Shahryar, who has been betrayed by his wife, marries a new bride each night and has her killed in the morning. Scheherazade volunteers, and every night she tells him a story that she leaves unfinished at dawn, so that he must let her live to hear the end. The tales inside include merchants, genies, thieves, and caliphs, and cover voyages such as those of Sinbad, magic, love, and trickery, often with stories nested inside other stories.

It is a good fit for readers who like folklore, fantasy, and the roots of storytelling. The tales are suited to dipping into one at a time.
