Settled on the edge of the Normandy coast in 1937, Irene Sauvelle and her family move into Cravenmoore, the estate of a reclusive toy creator named Lazarus Jann. While her mother works as his housekeeper, Irene and a local boy named Ismael investigate the mechanical oddities surrounding the mansion. They encounter lifelike automatons that seem to move of their own volition and a shadowy entity haunting the forest. The plot centers on a dark pact from the toymaker's past and the mystery of his wife’s hidden life within the manor.
Young adult readers who enjoy gothic atmosphere and mechanical puzzles will find a story built on suspense rather than traditional horror. The book provides a look at how past choices manifest as physical threats in the present. Readers finish the novel with a clear sense of how secrets can isolate a person and the specific ways that family loyalty functions under pressure. It serves as a study in building tension through setting and the use of inanimate objects to create a sense of unease.
Insights from Luminile din septembrie
